MODERATOR:  We are honored to be mentored by Jonathon Hake, retired M.D. Since receiving his medical degree in 1972, he was residency-trained and board-certified in family medicine and in preventive/occupational medicine. He taught and practiced 17 years on the faculties of Duke University, University of Arizona and University of Oklahoma. In 1988, he developed a degenerative spine condition. Four surgeries failed to relieve his chronic pain and led to a long period of disability, which he describes as his "residency training" in being a patient. Since 1996, he has facilitated cancer support groups, sharing his experiences with his own chronic condition in order to help patients find hope and healing in their journey with cancer. He retired in 2019 but continues to facilitate this group.
